Nathan Mullins describes himself as just an ordinary guy with a wife, a mortgage and three kids. But he does admit he's had more than his fair share of exceptional experiences. He an ex-cop, ex-soldier with the Army Reserve special services and ex-security consultant in Iraq who is currently back in the army training soldiers. He's also a volunteer with Australian Aid International and a corporate motivational speaker, working mostly with groups of men. He still does AAI work when he gets the call up. He lives in Melbourne.

Regardless of what the title may suggest, this is not a step by step instruction manual on how to amputate a leg. Nathan Mullins, the author, has, as they say, been around. He's been a policeman, a Commando and now an aid worker for Australian Aid International. How to Amputate a Leg is a collection of stories and annecdotes that Nathan has experienced along the way. With some absolutely hilarious recollections (that had me laughing out loud), mixed with some sobering stories, this book makes for great entertainment, with a touch of advice along the way. Oh, and there is one section where he does explain how to amputate a leg in the field, but also warns not to try it at home, because there's always one somewhere out there that will. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and highly recommend it to other readers. Keep your eye out for other books by this author.

This wasn't exactly what I expected from the title. I got it as research, and expected it to be boring. What I discovered was the subjects covered (more than aputations) were entertaining and eye opening. A great read.

Hard to put down

An accessible read that doesn't take away from the thoughtful insights and humour of one mans account of the world. Filled with great stories, a few laughs and even some life advice, it's worth a read for sure...

I stumbled across this book in a little off-the-beaten-path shop in rural Virginia and couldn't resist picking it up because of the title. I bought it after reading a few sample pages, and I'm very glad I did.Nathan is an Australian who appreciates explosions, fires, and exotic places (hey, who doesn't?). He was a military commando, a civilian security contractor, and a police officer. All interesting enough. But what's most interesting is the fact that he is also a thoughtful humanitarian.The book consists of about a dozen stories from Nathan's past, told in a wonderfully casual style as though he were across the table with the two of you enjoying a few adult beverages. Plenty of people have done adventurous stuff; few have the ability to write about their adventures in a way that paints a clear picture and also illustrates the author's worldview without being preachy.The world would be a better place with more people like Nathan Mullins. He's immature enough to want to make things go boom (which often makes a person fun to be around), yet mature enough to understand the importance of perspective and community -- and to recognize that people outside of his immediate culture are part of that community. He knows how to have fun and he can also write well. It's a win-win situation!
